Webster Technique & Baby Positioning During Pregnancy

Many mothers seek out a chiropractor trained in the Webster Technique during pregnancy to help support pelvic balance, healthy baby positioning, and preparation for birth.

At Inner Light Family Chiropractic in Lehi, Utah, Dr. Lawrence has advanced training in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care and is Webster Technique certified through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). This specialized training allows him to safely and gently support mothers throughout pregnancy.

Prenatal chiropractic care focuses on helping the spine, pelvis, and nervous system function optimally, creating the best possible environment for both mother and baby.

What Is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specialized chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed specifically for pregnancy. It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

The goal of the technique is to restore balance to the pelvis and surrounding muscles and ligaments.

When the pelvis becomes imbalanced during pregnancy, it can create tension in the ligaments supporting the uterus. This tension may reduce the space available for the baby to move freely.

The Webster Technique works to:

  • improve pelvic balance

  • restore motion to the sacrum and pelvic joints

  • reduce tension in the ligaments supporting the uterus

  • support the baby’s ability to move into an optimal position for birth

It’s important to understand that chiropractors do not manually turn babies. Instead, this technique helps create a balanced environment that allows babies to move into their preferred position naturally.

Why Baby Positioning Matters for Birth

Baby positioning plays an important role in how labor progresses.

Babies ideally move into a head-down position with their back facing the mother’s front, which allows them to move more easily through the pelvis during labor.

When tension or imbalance exists in the pelvis, it can sometimes limit the baby’s ability to move freely. This may contribute to positions such as:

  • breech positioning

  • posterior positioning (baby facing forward)

  • asynclitic positioning

By restoring balance in the pelvis, prenatal chiropractic care may help create more space and freedom for the baby to settle into an optimal position for birth.

The 3 P’s of Birth: Power, Passage, and Passenger

Birth professionals often describe labor using the Three P’s of Birth: Power, Passage, and Passenger. These three elements work together during labor.

When they are functioning well together, labor often progresses more efficiently.

Power: Effective Contractions

The power of labor refers to uterine contractions, which are controlled by the nervous system.

When the spine and nervous system are functioning well, the body may be better able to regulate and coordinate contractions during labor.

Passage: The Pelvis

The passage refers to the mother’s pelvis and the pathway the baby travels through during birth.

For labor to progress smoothly, the pelvis must be able to move and open properly as the baby descends.

Because the Webster Technique focuses on restoring pelvic balance, it may help support proper pelvic motion during labor.

Passenger: The Baby

The passenger refers to the baby and their position during labor.

When pelvic tension is reduced and the muscles and ligaments surrounding the uterus are balanced, babies may have greater freedom to move into an optimal position for birth.

When the body is balanced and the nervous system is functioning well, the Power, Passage, and Passenger are better able to work together as they were designed. It helps create an environment where the body can adapt more efficiently, often leading to a smoother and more connected birth experience.

Some studies and clinical observations have found that women receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy may experience shorter labor times and less discomfort during birth. While no approach can guarantee a specific outcome, our goal is to support your body so you can experience pregnancy and birth with greater ease, confidence, and trust in your body.
