What is a Subluxation? (And Why it Matters More Than You Think)

You've probably heard the word "subluxation" if you've ever been to a chiropractor or spent any time researching chiropractic care. But unless someone has taken the time to really explain it, the word can feel clinical, confusing, or easy to dismiss.

At Inner Light Family Chiropractic, subluxation isn't just a term we use. It's the very thing we are trained to find and address. It's the foundation of why we do what we do, and once you understand it, you may start seeing your family's health very differently.

So let's break it down in plain language.

Your Body Is Brilliantly Designed

Before we talk about what goes wrong, let's appreciate what goes right.

Your body is a self-healing, self-regulating system. It knows how to fight off bacteria, repair a cut, grow a baby, and keep your heart beating while you sleep without you thinking about it for a single second. That intelligence doesn't live in a bottle on a shelf somewhere. It lives inside you, and it communicates through your nervous system.

Think of your nervous system as the internet of your body. Your brain is the server. Your spinal cord and nerves are the cables and Wi-Fi. Every organ, muscle, gland, and cell in your body is constantly sending and receiving signals through that network. When the connection is clear, your body knows exactly what to do and does it beautifully.

When the connection is interrupted? That's where the problem begins.

So What Is a Subluxation?

A subluxation (sub-lux-AY-shun) is a interference in the nervous system, disrupting communication between the brain and body. This makes it hard if not impossible for brain to know what is happening inside and outside your body. If the brain doesn't know what is happening to you, then it is impossible for it to send appropriate instructions to the body. The body, then, can't adapt appropriately or in a timely manner, causing it to malfunction and eventually break down.

Think of being on a phone call and having poor reception. The call doesn't drop completely, you just can't understand what is being said fully. A subluxation is that poor reception. Your nervous system is still working, but the communication is distorted, delayed, or incomplete.

And here's the part that surprises most people: you usually can't feel it.

Just like high blood pressure or early tooth decay, a subluxation can be quietly affecting your body's function long before you notice any obvious symptoms. By the time something hurts, the interference has been there for a while, often for years.

What Causes Subluxations? The 3 T's

Subluxations don't happen randomly. They're the result of overwhelming stress, and there are three main types, which chiropractors call the 3 T's:

Thoughts — Mental and emotional stress. Anxiety, grief, chronic worry, overwhelm. Yes, emotional stress can physically affect the body. Your nervous system doesn't separate "life stress" from "body stress." In fact, this is the most common cause of subluxations.

Toxins — Chemical stress. Poor diet, environmental pollutants, harsh chemicals in personal care products, and medications can all place a burden on the body that shows up in the nervous system. This is the second most common cause of subluxations.

Trauma — Physical stress on the body. This includes obvious things like car accidents or sports injuries, but also the everyday stuff: the birth process itself, learning to walk, carrying a baby on one hip, sitting at a desk for hours, or years of poor posture. Whether the trauma happened all at once in an instant, or small micro-traumas happened over time, the stress leads to miscommunication within the nervous system.

When your body can handle these stressors, no problem. When they pile up and overwhelm the system, subluxations form, and if they're left unaddressed, their impact compounds over time. Think of it like electricity to your home. If it is a normal amount of electricity, everything works fine. If an overwhelming power surge comes along, the circuit breaker shuts off the power to protect the home. Similarly, when the surge of stress hits your system, the nervous system subluxates, shutting off the power / communication.

What Happens When a Subluxation Goes Uncorrected?

Chiropractors describe the downstream effects of subluxation as the 4 D's:

Dysafferentation (bad feedback) - Your brain loses its accurate picture of what's happening in your body. It's essentially flying blind, which means it can't respond appropriately to stress or change.

Dyskinesia (bad motion) - The normal flow of nerve signals gets disrupted, making it harder for your muscles to receive proper instructions. The muscles tighten (cramp / trigger point) to guard and protect, while movement becomes less coordinated, and muscles may not contract at full strength.

Dysautonomia (bad stress response) - Because your brain is struggling to know what is going on around it, and your muscles are not responding normally, your fight-or-flight response gets stuck in the "on" position. Chronically. This pulls resources away from digestion, immunity, sleep, and cellular repair. You can't be in survival mode and healing mode at the same time, and so the body starts to breakdown.

Dysponesis (bad energy output) - With all this going on, your body starts burning enormous energy just trying to compensate and survive. This wasted energy could otherwise go toward healing, growing, and thriving.

Over weeks, months, and years, these effects accumulate  not just as back pain, but as a gradual erosion of how well your whole body functions. Its similar to a snowball rolling down a hill. Starts off small, but as it rolls it picks up speed and size. Eventually, it becomes an avalanche that will take out anything or anyone in its path. As it rolls, more and more damage occurs to your body.

This Is Why We Don't Wait for Symptoms

Here's a truth that goes against the grain of how most of us were raised to think about health: feeling fine is not the same as being well.

We've all heard of someone who seemed perfectly healthy, and then had a heart attack without warning. Cardiovascular disease is a process that builds silently over decades. Tooth decay shows no symptoms until there's a cavity serious enough to cause pain. The subluxation process works the same way. Symptoms are often the last thing to show up, not the first.

This is why Dr. Lawrence checks patients, including newborns and young children; not because they're in pain, but because function matters before pain ever arrives. Catching and addressing subluxations early is one of the most proactive things a family can do for their long-term health.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, gentle input to the nervous system, designed to correct subluxations and restore clear communication throughout. When that interference is removed, the body doesn't need to be told what to do... it already knows. It simply gets back to doing it.

At Inner Light, Dr. Lawrence uses a combination of techniques, some very light, some more firm, customized to each patient. No two systems are the same, and no two care plans are either. We use an extremely thorough exam, nervous system scans including thermography, electromyography, and heart rate variability to see what's actually happening beneath the surface, not just to guess based on symptoms.

And because subluxations are caused by everyday stressors that don't go away, chiropractic care works best as an ongoing wellness practice, not a one-time fix. Much like brushing your teeth or staying active, keeping your nervous system clear should be a basic part of life that pays dividends for a lifetime.

Is This Relevant for My Kids Too?

Absolutely!!! Even more so than for the adults.

The very first stress many of us experience is being born. Even the gentlest birth can place significant force on a newborn's neck and spine. From there, the falls, tumbles, backpacks, and screen time of childhood stack up quickly. Children's nervous systems are developing rapidly, and subluxations can interfere with that development in ways that don't always look like back pain - they can show up as sleep issues, irritability, difficulty nursing, immune challenges, and more.

Kids also respond to chiropractic care faster than adults, and the adjustments are incredibly gentle. There is no popping, cracking, or twisting. Caring for a child's nervous system early is one of the greatest investments a parent can make.
