When Should You Start Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?
One of the most common things pregnant women say after starting chiropractic care is:
“I wish I would have started sooner.”
A lot of moms first begin looking into prenatal chiropractic late in pregnancy, often around 34, 36, or even 38 weeks, after finding out their baby is breech or after months of increasing discomfort.
And while receiving care at that stage can still be incredibly valuable, many women are surprised to learn that prenatal chiropractic care is about so much more than trying to “flip” a breech baby or ease discomfort.
In reality, chiropractic care during pregnancy is often most helpful when it’s a regular part of supporting your body throughout the entire pregnancy journey.
Pregnancy Changes Your Entire Body
Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable physical transformations the human body goes through. From the first trimester onward, everything is shifting - your posture, your center of gravity, your ligament flexibility, your pelvis. Month by month, your body is continuously adapting to make room for a growing baby and prepare for birth.
Your nervous system is the one coordinating all of that.
It's directing the hormonal shifts, the structural changes, the communication between your brain and every organ, muscle, and joint involved in growing and sustaining a life. That's an enormous job, and it's happening from day one.
So when we talk about prenatal chiropractic care at Inner Light, we're not talking about managing symptoms at the finish line. We're talking about supporting your nervous system and your body's ability to adapt throughout the entire journey.

Common Doesn't Mean Normal
By the third trimester, a lot of moms feel like their body is compensating everywhere, uneven gait, disrupted sleep, tension through the hips and low back, a pelvis that just doesn't feel like it moves right anymore.
These experiences are incredibly common during pregnancy. Many OB's tell moms that there's nothing they can do for things like pelvic pain, low back pain, or SPD. Moms are told that they just have to live it and it will go away after they give birth.
But common and normal are not the same thing.
Many women under regular chiropractic care throughout pregnancy report feeling more comfortable and mobile. One of our patients, referred to us during her second pregnancy after months of mid-back pain she had assumed she'd just have to endure, was able to continue running throughout that pregnancy and deliver without medication after a six-hour labor. Her first pregnancy, without care, had been a very different story.
We're not promising that as a universal outcome. Every pregnancy is unique. But we do believe you deserve support rather than being told to simply wait it out.
What Pelvic Balance Actually Means
One of the areas Dr. Lawrence focuses on most during prenatal care is the pelvis, and not just because it's where discomfort tends to show up.
Your pelvis is designed to move. It shifts and opens throughout pregnancy and birth. When the joints, muscles, and ligaments supporting your pelvis become restricted or uneven, your body begins compensating in other places. Sometimes that shows up as noticeable discomfort. Sometimes it's subtle, a feeling of being "off," tension you can't quite locate, or movement that just doesn't feel as free as it used to. Sometimes it doesn't show up as physical at all and shows itself as cognitive / memory struggles. That's right, the function of your pelvis plays a huge role in "mom brain" issues.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy supports pelvic balance and nervous system function so your body can do what it's designed to do: adapt, move, and function well as your baby grows.

Let's Clear Something Up About the Webster Technique
If you've been researching prenatal chiropractic, you've probably come across the Webster Technique. You may have seen it described as a way to "flip" breech babies.
That's a common misconception worth addressing directly.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment focused on reducing tension and improving balance within the pelvis and the surrounding soft tissues. The goal is not to manually reposition your baby. The goal is to support your pelvis and nervous system so that your baby has the freedom to move and position naturally on their own.
Sometimes, when restriction and imbalance are reduced, babies do find their way to an optimal position. But that's a result of your body functioning better, not something being done to the baby.
This is also why we encourage moms to start care well before 37 weeks, not just when positioning becomes a concern. Dr Lawrence finds that the sooner the better when it comes to starting care, but at least by 20 weeks is ideal. Supporting pelvic balance throughout pregnancy may help your body adapt more efficiently the entire way through, not just in those final weeks.
You Don't Have to Wait for Something to Go Wrong
One of the things that genuinely saddens us is how often women are told that pelvic pain, instability, or physical tension during pregnancy are simply part of the deal, something to push through until the baby arrives.
Pregnancy is hard. That's real. But being unsupported doesn't have to be part of the experience.
You don't have to be in significant pain to benefit from care. You don't have to have a breech baby to think about pelvic balance. You don't have to wait until something feels seriously wrong to ask for support.
Just like you might support your pregnancy with movement, nutrition, and rest, chiropractic care should be part of how you support the way your body functions and communicates throughout this season.
So When Should You Start?
Honestly? Whenever you're ready. Early in pregnancy, even the first trimester, is a great time to establish care, get a baseline assessment, and start supporting your body proactively rather than reactively.
If you're further along and just learning about this now, that's okay too. There's still meaningful support available at every stage.
